Growing Moringa Plant in many countries is very difficult.
To grow moringa plant in the tropical countries is not a problem, especially here in the Philippines. We are very rich of what they called superfood and miracle tree or tree of life.
Below I tackled about how to grow this nutritious plant in the backyard even if the surroundings have no landfilling.
Most likely, the majority of us Filipinos, moringa plant is essential wherever we are in the world. Although some people in our country don’t plant moringa, don’t you know why? Because they only have to ask their neighbors or buy in the market.
For us, in the family, this plant is our first class vegetable. It is our viand or dishes mixed with fish, chicken, pork and other vegetables.
Moringa Plant is the Home Flag Tree of the Filipinos
If you are not a Filipino and when it happens you visit the Philippines, be sure to observe the Filipino homes, having Moringa plant in their backyards.
I have not gone to the USA or Hawaii. However, I have read that if you see a moringa plant in the garden somewhere in the USA or Hawaii, you can be sure that the owner of the house is a Filipino.
Oh yes! In the Southern part of the US, they could have grown a moringa plant. I saw a picture of Moringa plant somewhere in Arizona.
I think in Florida, California down to Mexico people could also grow moringa plant.
This tree will grow in the Tropical areas, and it can survive in a close dry season. The reason it will not grow in a frozen ground during winter or in a wet ground even in the tropical countries, it is because the roots cannot survive in cold and in water for a long time.
So there is perfect timing with the seasons of the moringa plant in the Philippines. This plant will grow all the time with healthy green leaves until its trunk will produce matured pods and then the leaves are going to become fewer and smaller.
Prune the Trunks of the Moringa Plant for new Generation of Leaves
When the pods are dried up, that means the seeds are ready to be harvested for seedlings or to be extracted to make oil. If all the seeds dried up, that is the time to prune the trunks for other new several trunks to sprout.
If you do not prune the logs after the pods bearing, several trunks will sprout up to the top of each log which is not good looking for a moringa tree. For a new green looking moringa plant, prune the trunks about two to four feet from the ground.
After pruning, the tree will start to sprout with new several trunks and grow very fast.
You can begin to harvest when there are at least about ten palms of leaves up to 3 months before you will prune again.
How To Grow Moringa Plant in the Backyard Without Land Filling
So, you might think you cannot grow Moringa in your backyard.
It is a problem in the yard which does not have a land-filling, which cemented all around the house, this is usually in the villages of the major cities.
Here is the good news! You can grow moringa if you want even if you are in this situation.
You may ask a question, how to grow moringa plant in my backyard?
Here is the answer; you need to buy a barrel or drum – the big one. Fill it with enough good and fertile soil for about full. Make sure to make holes at the bottom of the drum.
Now, you can plant the pruned trunk of moringa plant or a seedling and or directly the seed on the top of your barrel. Plant your moringa in the middle on the top soil of your drum.
So taking care of moringa plant is more likely what you do to other plants in the backyard. However, if you plant the trunk, do not touch it or move it until you see several grown sprouts.
Just cultivate the surroundings on the top of the drum without touching the plant.
You can benefit even just only one plant of moringa like this in your backyard for many years to come.
I think this is applicable even in not tropical areas which during winter you can cover the surface to be sure not to be frozen.
By the way, this is only a presumption; so far I have not heard or read something like this. But anyway, who knows this is effective and why not to try if you are in this area.
