People who have a family history should pay regular visits to an oncologist as it is very important to timely reveal the signs of large bowel disease in order to maximize the chances of recovery.
- Adenomatous Polyps Formation.
Most cases of colon cancer occur due to the formation of Adenomatous polyps (tumor) in different regions of the large bowel (colon).
Polyps greater than one centimeter in diameter are associated with a greater risk of cancer. If polyps are not removed, they continue to grow and can become cancerous.
There are several diseases and conditions that have been associated with an increased risk of colon cancer. Diabetes, acromegaly (a growth hormone disorder), radiation treatment for other cancers, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease all increase the risk of colon cancer.
